Inspiring Interviews | Alexandra Weishaupt of HEPP SHOP
I’m SO "heppy" to interview this fabulous local lady. Girls- you’re not going to want to miss this gorgeous new store, and guys- seriously awesome gift site ahead (you can do no wrong here! Her site is so good and incredibly reasonable!)
The lovely Alexandra Weishaupt (soon to be Alexandra DeForest!) and I became friends a few years ago after she and Chris moved to Charleston. She and my boyfriend grew up together in Kingston, NY (where I’m convinced some of the best people in the world hail from!) Alex studied and cheered at Boston College. After school, she worked in media publication sales and as a news reporter for stations in Utah, New York, and Charleston.
As soon as I met Alex, I knew I MUST be friends with her. She is magnetic, motivated, and we both love to have a good time. And y’all, in addition to the fact that she’s a beautiful person inside and out, Alex has an impeccable sense of style.
M: Alex, you’re pretty much the bomb when it comes to picking a great piece or styling an outfit. Where does much of your style inspiration come from?
A: For the past several years, I’ve really enjoyed finding and following bloggers, and now it’s become somewhat of the driving force behind my online boutique, and a big influence on the pieces I’ve selected for HeppShop.com. Real women rocking adorable outfits styled by themselves - love it!
How long have you known that you wanted to open your own store?
Opening my own store has always been somewhat of a dream, but I never really knew where to begin, nor did I think it was a realistic expectation. After all, starting your own business is risky, and I like to play it safe! Given my background in television news and marketing/advertising industries, I found that the best way to learn, improve and perfect was with actual hands on experience. With that, I decided there was no better time than the present to take the leap! I’m so glad that I did!
Where did the shop name come from?
“Hepp” holds a very special meaning! My grandfather's last name was Heppner and “Hepp” was written alongside his toolbox. He was a meticulous and passionate engineer, and I have fond memories of sitting with him at his work bench, which has ultimately inspired both the name and aesthetics of HeppShop.com.
What do you love most about the Charleston area?
I’ve found the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit in Charleston to be both a breath of fresh air and completely inspiring! The city is radiating with so many ambitious, intelligent and hard working young adults who are bringing their thoughts to life and dreams to fruition -- whether full time, part time or whenever their schedules allow it -- it’s a feeling that you can’t help but have rub off on you!
Favorite dining spot in Charleston?
There are so many great places to choose from! One restaurant in particular that I keep going back to is The Americano. I love the laid back atmosphere, and am always impressed with the cocktails and cuisine. Mexican Mule? Yes, please!
If you had to bring a piece of New York with you to Charleston, what would it be?
Aside from my family, (and bagels of course) I would bring Jean Turmo Fragrance Oils from Woodstock, NY. They're locally made, they’re reasonably priced, and they're AH-Mazing!
What is something you think every woman should have in her closet?
The building blocks to a great closet are the basic essentials. I love to start the season with some fresh neutral tops. They always prove to be completely transitional and never lacking in the comfort department, which is key! I’ve opted for some torn and distressed styles to give the Hepp Shop spring collection a little extra edge.
For the men who are reading- what, your opinion, is the best gift for that special lady in their lives?
An unexpected written note. Sappy? Totally. But what’s better than receiving a heartfelt reminder about how much your guy cares about you? For the men out there who aren’t down with putting their feelings on paper, go with whatever she’s been obsessing about (within reason), but doesn’t want to splurge on!
You’re a dog momma to a precious little pup (I have to gush for a minute – her Shih tzu, Minnie, is such a sweetie.) What can you tell us folks who really want to get an animal in the near future (including myself..?)
Miss Minnie is our sweetheart, so I would say go for it! Ha! My fiancé travels a great deal and she’s my best little girlfriend when he’s away. Although we find ourselves making plans around her all too often, we couldn’t imagine life without her, and I'm sure all pet owners feel the same.
What piece(s) from HEPP are you most excited to incorporate into your wardrobe this next season?
I’m loving the cold shoulder trend! The look is cute, casual and super feminine. There are some great dresses, tops and rompers with the cold shoulder detail coming soon to HeppShop.com, and I can’t wait to share them!
What advice can you give someone who wants to begin his or her own business, but is nervous to make the jump?
Do your research, stay positive, and don't be afraid to ask for help. You'd be surprised by how many people are willing and eager to answer your questions and give valuable advice! Good luck!
